I have been getting cluster headaches for years. I thought I was over them because I hadn't had a bout for 3 years...until now.
My experience is they last up to 6 weeks and gradually increase in intensity then drop off. The headaches in the middle of this period are the worst. I have driven through red lights to get to the emergency department of hospitals more than once. I am currently 3 weeks or so in to a episode. Last night wasn't great but luckily Im on holidays at the moment. Ive had very little success with medications and only once tried the preventatives. Ive visited a chinese doctor too.
A doctor friend of mine‚ who knows a little about the phenomena‚ said if I ever end up in emergency again‚ ask for chlorpromazine IV. THis sounds pretty serious because I know this is an anti psychotic medication. Several years ago I ended up at the Austin here in Melbourne and they put a canula in my arm but the headache subsided before I tried this medication.
I anticipate logging a little over the next few weeks then disappearing once the current bout leaves. THanks for the site and all the best to those who pace the house (even the streets) at night waiting for the pain to go. Scott
