I got my first ever major headache / migraine Sept 28 2009, We just finished up a meeting at work and I went to break , sitting on the toilet and peeing, I was a bit plugged up so as i pushed to do my business - defecation - i strained quite hard and nothing came out. ust then i thought I was having an aneurysm. The pain started from 0 - zero - and went to 15 out of a pain scale from 1 to 10. 10 being the absolute worst, i have torn a acl . mcl in my knee years ago playing soccer so I understand pain. I also have a bad spine, you can see a image in my profile, another curve is also below that one. so I know pain.

BUT this was way worse. Way worse. I asked my boss to drive my to the ER and the boys at work were all laughing at me as they just spoke to me 3 minutes prior and i was fine.
they could not fathom the pain i was feeling. No way.

I tried many things and find 20-40mg of Oxycontin helps take the edge off. Also, taking a benzo such as lorazepam or clonazepam will get me to sleep and relax me. The panic of the immense pain is unreal. All of my doctors disagree. The push here politically against these 2 types of medications is so bad they don't\ want to hear it.

All of my MRI's and brain CT scans showed nothing strange. why did i get this pain?

I do recall that morning the weather was cold and rainy. I did feel cold and wet when i came into work and ever since that day if it rains or is cool I am hesitant to leave me house.

Hi,
I'm not quite sure where to start, Im sorry you suffer from migraines. Have you been diagnosed officially by a Neurologist or at a headache clinic? From what you have written on your other post I am not sure that you understand fully what a cluster headache sufferer goes through. One of the most offensive things that can be said to a sufferer is "I have migraines, I know what your going through", This is due to the fact that migraines and clusterheadaches only commonality is that pain occurs within the head. Migraines are considered severe pain, CH is considered excrutiating, the frequency and extent of attacks are also very different. I am glad you can get some relief from oxy's and benzo's but if you ask any CH sufferer they will tell you that you could throw boxes of the stuff at them and the only effect it will have is to make them sleepy, these medications have no benefit at all against the pain of CH! Unfortunately some sufferers do from time to time in desperation have to resort to opioids just to take the edge off, however this tends to lead to an added issue of then becoming addicted as well as suffering from such a horrific condition.
All I can suggest is keep a well documented headache diary and find a specialist who has the capability of diagnosing you accurately.

Regards Shellicon

People I believe we must take great take care comparing the pain of migraines and cluster headaches. During my last trip in hospital a couple of my attacks took on the characteristics of migraines which took me quite by surprise and as my neurologist said this can be typical with chronic cluster headaches. I can assure you the pain was as intense and excruciating as my "normal" cluster headaches.
Dear Oxyman-all the way from Toronto!
Shell is so right! You need to find yourself a good doctor who can check you out and diagnose you and ensure you have a treatment plan. If you are unhappy with the outcome of a doctor's visit--find another doctor!
For a starter have a good read of the information on the left hand side and get a handle on what cluster headaches are all about, and as Shell says start a head ache diary so that when you see the doctor you are able to provide him/her with a picture of what is happening.
It sounds as though you have only had 1 headache but that you are still worried because you do not want to go out because of the weather. If this is the case there is only option open to you--go to the doctor and discuss your fear with him/her. No one should have to feel like that.
Good luck
Heather

you made a great point, out of the 3 neurologists I saw only 1 actually gave me any feedback or explanation at all, the other 2 were totally a waste of time & i question their existence on this planet. ie; "your pain should not be that bad" was one of their comments. So you can imagine what I have gone through slightly.

After reading up on cluster headache i will confidently say YES, 100% I had my first ever episode Sept 28th 2009 - approx 1:20pm or so (in that time ....) and i recall this and all of the details of that day - right down to the temp, people I spoke to, all and every detail because i thought it was MY LAST DAY ON EARTH IN THIS SHELL OF A BODY.

The pain was unlike any i have ever had. from a pain scale of 1 -10 with 10 being the worst pain i was at least at a 15, perhaps at 20 out of 10 at some distinct points in that Sept 28th day. This is why i also agree it was not a migraine per se, i just used this term too too loosely in error. sorry.

I was then in pain for the next 2 weeks in my home, dark room, and according to a video i saw of a guy unable to sit or lay or find a comfy position to rest, moaning, groaning, and swaying on his chair - i felt like that for 2 weeks.

Lucky for me I only had a few of those episodes since and only 1 was close to the 1st. A 12 out of 10 on the pain chart.

Since, i have had wimpy (compared to that monster) migraines since, but strong enough to make me extremely nervous, anxious, scared, terrified, and praying that it not progress.
