Roger's CH attack diary

Roger's Profile

Wednesday 10 February, 2016: 07:00pm - 07:30pm

1

Only a very mild and very tolerable reminder of the past 6 weeks today. I do believe they have gone for another 5+ years!

Notes for next time: (which should be around mid 2021 if I'm lucky)

  • Get oxygen early.
  • try verapmil or tegretol (z says tegretol works for her)
  • Get imigran spray on private script, 7 boxes at a time -cheaper -$90.50 at chemist warehouse for 7 boxes (14 doses)
  • Take asprin daily, as thinner blood makes them less severe
  • take 2 nodoz daily for caffeine, to help constrict or at least inhibit the extent of the blood vessel dilation
  • ice cold drinks or ice cream help
  • control breathing so as not to get so nauseated
  • try to remain calm during an attack to help prevent adrenalin/nausea/panic
  • put car air on non-recirculate to stop co2 build up
  • use beconase
  • these ones were all on left side

Tuesday 09 February, 2016: 06:00pm - 07:30pm

3

Decided not to use a spray because it seems like I am approaching the end of them as they are very mild these days. So this one lasted 1.5 hours and I watched tv throughout. I've spent about $480 on sprays so if I can get away with not using them now then it's definitely a good thing!

Tuesday 09 February, 2016: 02:35am - 02:55am

3

Monday 08 February, 2016: 02:00pm - 02:20pm

3

Monday 08 February, 2016: 07:00am - 07:25am

4

Woken up by it, and of course my nose is blocked when I wake, so had to wait for it to clear before using spray. Luckily it worked ok.

Sunday 07 February, 2016: 07:10pm - 07:50pm

4

This is when it hit, but it left me with a "bad headache" all evening. Luckily a normal "bad headache" is no where near as bad as a normal cluster headache, so was able to continue watching tv, using computer etc. It was annoying though.

Sunday 07 February, 2016: 09:50am - 11:25am

6

Started as I was waking up this morning at 9:50. My nose was blocked when I got up, so was unable to use the spray effectively. Took another spray at 10:30.. but at least it wasn't a high pain level one this morning.
So relieved it wasn't a repeat of Friday afternoon!

Saturday 06 February, 2016: 03:30pm - 04:00pm

1

Was out shopping so glad this one never progressed. Used imigran spray.

Saturday 06 February, 2016: 02:50am - 03:10am

3

Imigran spray worked.

Friday 05 February, 2016: 12:00pm - 03:50pm

8

The 8 level was from 12:30 to 2pm. After that I was worn out so I was sent to bed and tried to get rid of the remaining pain with cold wet towel and sleep.

Thursday 04 February, 2016: 10:50pm - 11:25pm

4

Another medium one that didnt get too painful. the 2 sprays didn't get rid of it fast though

Thursday 04 February, 2016: 04:40pm - 05:10pm

3

Imigran spray stopped it from getting bad.

Thursday 04 February, 2016: 09:30am - 09:35am

1

I took Beconase and Imigran really soon after starting to feel it coming. It cleared up right away.

Wednesday 03 February, 2016: 11:15am - 12:20pm

6

10:40 - dropped M off at Gym and went to Murrumba downs house, put nut on bolt for patio inspection, Felt CH starting to come.
11:00 quickly drove to Carseldine Chemist Warehouse (10 mins away) to get prescription
handed prescription at counter at 11:20.
....CH getting worse....
11:30 having to press fingers into temple while waiting....
11:40 finally get prescription
11:43 get back to car take spray, then drive 20 mins to Gym and arrive just as pain is now too much to be able to drive safely.
M gets in and drives us home with me in much pains!
Get home, take Beconase spray, 10 seconds later, pain stops dead......

Tuesday 02 February, 2016: 08:05pm - 09:00pm

4

Beconase spray and imigran spray didnt get rid of it, but it was pretty mild so I think they lessened it

Tuesday 02 February, 2016: 10:20am - 10:25am

4

Took Beconase Allergy & Hayfever spray to clear my stuffy nose before taking imigran spray. As soon as I took 2 sprays of the Beconase, the CH instantly vanished!

Monday 01 February, 2016: 01:00pm - 02:30pm

9

Worst one in a while. Spray didn't work :( left with a tension headache.

Sunday 31 January, 2016: 08:40pm - 08:55pm

4

Easily aborted with imigran spray while watching the new x files series

Sunday 31 January, 2016: 12:25am - 01:05am

6

Was slow to build so wondered if it would get worse for the first 15 mins, but it did so got up, used spray and went to car for aircon. Luckily the spray worked.

Saturday 30 January, 2016: 05:10am - 05:25am

6

Woke me up. Took spray at 5:17. Lucky it worked within 10 mins :)

Friday 29 January, 2016: 10:15am - 10:30am

2

Thursday 28 January, 2016: 05:30pm - 07:15pm

6

Spray didn't work, and has left me with a dull headache and random stabs of hight intensity pain every minute or so.

Thursday 28 January, 2016: 10:00am - 03:00pm

1

Didnt get the 1:30am one.
Didn't get the 10:30am one.

Just a regular headache all day with the same sort of CH feel to it (location and type of pain feeling)

Wednesday 27 January, 2016: 08:30pm - 09:10pm

6

I predicted it would hit at 8:30 and it did.

Wednesday 27 January, 2016: 11:05am - 11:15am

5

This was a short one... My nose was blocked on the left side so couldn't use the spray at first, tried beconaise to unblock nose a bit, and then used spray. After that, it went in about 5 minutes.

Wednesday 27 January, 2016: 05:40am - 06:00am

6

I was expecting it around 1:30 - 2:30am, And I knew it would come after I went to sleep as sleep is one of the triggers, so I stayed awake until 4:30am to prevent it. But it came at around 5:40am. Luckily I woke up fast (from a dream too) and had the spray next to the bed and took it, then went to the car and sat with the freezing aircon against my eye/termple for 20 minutes, until it was completely gone. Another one cut short by the spray in 15 - 20 minutes

Tuesday 26 January, 2016: 07:00pm - 07:25pm

6

Spray stopped it after 20 mins.

Tuesday 26 January, 2016: 10:05am - 10:20am

3

Nicely aborted with imigran spray. I get a full 8 hours freedom until the next one arrives!

Tuesday 26 January, 2016: 01:10am - 03:00am

9

Woke me up at 1:15 so i didnt have a chance to do the spray in time.
So I spent an hour and 45 mins in the car headbanging to the radio.
Literally. On the steering wheel. With car aircon blasting.

Monday 25 January, 2016: 05:00pm - 07:00pm

3

This one one that was due at around 5... seeing as I am getting them roughly every 8 hours now. I felt it coming for a while, so I waited a bit, then took a spray well before it started taking its belt off, and managed to skip it. Small victories...

Monday 25 January, 2016: 09:00am - 09:20am

8

Oh, just in case the over night ordeal wasn't enough punishment, and I thought I could get some sleep and hide...
Luckily the spray worked on this one after 20 mins to get rid of the marjor aspects of it.... still the underlying stress headache that won't go (edit: was completely pain free by 10:30am :))

Monday 25 January, 2016: 01:30am - 04:30am

9

It's getting silly now. I dont know if I can face another 3 hour relentless torture session.

Sunday 24 January, 2016: 04:00pm - 05:15pm

6

I took a spray, but this was a strange one. During the 75 mins it left left and came back 3 times for about 5 - 10 mins of being gone each time.

Sunday 24 January, 2016: 08:40am - 08:55am

3

Imigran spray worked. So no repeat of yesterday!!

Saturday 23 January, 2016: 08:05pm - 08:25pm

4

Spray worked... but nerve is still affected from this morning's 4 hour ordeal so there is a constant headache all evening

Saturday 23 January, 2016: 09:25am - 09:45am

6

Well... here's the thing: i had run out of sprays... yet this one went away as fast as if I had used a spray... So have they all been like this (except for a few that lasted longer) and the spray haa been doing nothing? Do I buy another week's worth of sprays costing $90 when it could be a waste?

Saturday 23 January, 2016: 10:25am - 01:15pm

9

It came back after a 30 min break. And it was bad. No spray... ended up vomiting at about 11:30. I'm left with a regular stress headache from having to tolerate the high level of pain for so long.

Friday 22 January, 2016: 07:35pm - 07:50pm

4

A mild one this time, went away before it became very bad. What a relief after this mornings ordeal.

Friday 22 January, 2016: 02:00am - 02:15am

6

Friday 22 January, 2016: 10:45am - 01:45pm

9

Ended up at caboolture hospital because it wasn't going away after an hour, and there was nausea and numbness in hands and feet

Thursday 21 January, 2016: 06:00pm - 06:40pm

6

Thursday 21 January, 2016: 10:55am - 11:10am

4

Wednesday 20 January, 2016: 07:00pm - 07:15pm

4

Wednesday 20 January, 2016: 01:00pm - 01:20pm

9

Tuesday 19 January, 2016: 08:00pm - 08:30pm

7

Took spray but... 30 mins suggests it took a while to work.

Tuesday 19 January, 2016: 01:10pm - 01:30pm

7

Imigran took 20 mins to get rid of it this time. Probably due to the wine I had at lunch....

Monday 18 January, 2016: 08:20pm - 08:35pm

7

Imigran spray - 15 minutes exactly to get rid of it again.

Monday 18 January, 2016: 11:45am - 12:25pm

7

Was out walking dogs. Gor home and used spray at 11:55. CH seemed to end at 12:10 but within a couple minutes came back to give me another 10 minute beating.

Sunday 17 January, 2016: 04:40pm - 05:25pm

8

Spray didn't work :(

Sunday 17 January, 2016: 01:35am - 01:55am

8

Spray didnt work :(

Friday 15 January, 2016: 11:15am - 11:30am

6

Spray fixed it!

Friday 15 January, 2016: 02:40am - 02:55am

8

It woke me. This one was a surprise. Most painful yet.

Thursday 14 January, 2016: 06:15pm - 06:25pm

5

Imigran fixed it in 10 mins

Thursday 14 January, 2016: 10:30am - 10:45am

6

Imigran Spray aborted it :)

Wednesday 13 January, 2016: 10:45pm - 11:00pm

Imigran spray didnt work. :(

Monday 11 January, 2016: 12:30pm - 01:15pm

6

Was at cafe, no Imigran spray on me. :(

Monday 11 January, 2016: 01:30am - 01:45am

5

I didn't get one during the day (sunday), so thought they might have ended, but they came during the night pretty bad, (1:30 am) but was able to end it with 5 year old and 3 year expired imigran spray.

Saturday 09 January, 2016: 02:00pm - 02:30pm

3

Mild and short... have been building over the past week. Worth mentioning now.

Above period: 64 Attacks over 32 days.

Saturday 09 October, 2010: 11:00am - 12:00pm

4

Friday 08 October, 2010: 11:00am - 12:00pm

6

imigran after the funeral got rid of this one, after enduring it during the funeral for an hour, lucky it was just a mild one, so was mostly able to hide it.

Saturday 02 October, 2010: 10:15am - 10:25am

6

leaving for norway in an hour... lucky the imigran spary did its thing.

Thursday 30 September, 2010: 12:10pm - 12:25pm

6

Sigh.

Monday 27 September, 2010: 03:10pm - 03:25pm

3

This one started while we were at the shopping centre at Chermside, but Imigran got fid of it in about 10 - 15 mins.

Monday 27 September, 2010: 05:00am - 05:10am

4

2 hours after falling asleep they seem to wake me... Imigran nasal spray aborted it as usual. got to make sure nose isn't blocked tho..
The Tegretol is definitely doing nothing to block the pain of them.

Sunday 26 September, 2010: 03:40am - 04:00am

4

When I first got up, I tried the hot pack on the back of the neck to see if it worked... it didn't, so 10 mins in I used the Imigran spray. That of course worked and just 7 mins after using it, the attack drained away to non-existence :)

Sunday 26 September, 2010: 03:50pm - 04:05pm

4

Aborted with Imigran while driving home from Bunnings. Took a couple of Endone as well in case the Imigran failed (Singapore GP on tonight and I don't want to be left with a tension headache after a killer CH has passed to ruin it! )

Saturday 25 September, 2010: 01:40am - 01:50am

5

Aborted with Imigran (yay!) and took a couple of opiate pain killers just in case (Endone)

Friday 24 September, 2010: 01:15pm - 03:25pm

8

This time, after 2 hellish hours of it, I got Marianne to take me to the medical centre and asked to be put on oxygen to abort it. It worked in about 15-20 mins. My regular doc came in and made sure I was deep breathing slowly, which was very difficult, but I managed to force myself. The Nurse there was just great as well, and went to the trouble of faxing and organising a call from their oxygen supplier to me, to arrange in home oxygen supply. After the pain mostly left we had a nice chat. It turns out my doc, the nurse and I all have the same birthday! What are the odds... The doc then prescribed some opiates for pain relief and ordered a CT scan to be sure. It's been about 12 years since my last one, so good idea I think..

Friday 24 September, 2010: 02:40am - 03:35am

6

Despite Tramal pain killer, Mobic pain killer (both samples from doc) and Imigran nasal spray and Tegretol, it still came and lasted nearly 1 hour. However, due to the pain killers, I woke up at 6:30 this morning completely pain free in the head, which I haven't felt for a long time. The feeling was quite weird and foreign.... I also woke up wide awake, so much for the side effects of all the drugs causing drowsiness. Didn't get any dizziness either from the tegretol... I think I usually need twice the dose of normal people to experience both side effects and the sought after effect.

Thursday 23 September, 2010: 03:20am - 07:15am

9

OMG. Worst one yet, and Imigran nasal spray did nothing. After about 2 hours of it, you really do start to worry about it not stopping.... Nausea with this one too, although that was probably from the adrenaline of trying to deal with the constant pain. Nearly 4 hours of pure hell.
I sent Marianne to the doc office at 6:45 (their hours were not listed online) to see what time they opened because I concluded that the only way to get it to stop was to get on some oxygen, however while she was out, it was like a switch was flipped, and it stopped at 7am exactly, leaving just a bad tension headache and a few shadows, which I can happily live with and enjoy feeling compared to what I was experiencing for the previous 3.5 hours!

Exhausted, I went back to bed still with the wet towels Marianne had been feeding me and slept till 11.

I went to the doc at 12, who put me on Tegretol at my request, and gave me some stronger than codeine pain killers, and told me to just go to the Prince Charles hospital next time tell them 'cluster headaches' and ask for oxygen, she said they all know about CHs there and will put you straight on it. good to know.

Tuesday 21 September, 2010: 07:05pm - 07:40pm

4

Again with the 7pm annoying other side of the head one...

Tuesday 21 September, 2010: 02:15am - 02:25am

6

Imigran aborted it after 10 mins as usual

Monday 20 September, 2010: 07:35pm - 08:05pm

4

On the right hand side... all have been on the left up until now

Monday 20 September, 2010: 01:40am - 01:50am

4

Aborted with Imigran. This was annoying beause I was having an interesting dream when it woke me, and I couldn't remember what the dream was about !

Sunday 19 September, 2010: 09:35am - 09:50am

5

A different time again, short and sweet, I believe Imigran aborted it nicely. Time goes so fast during an attack!

Saturday 18 September, 2010: 10:10pm - 10:35pm

4

Another short lived mild one. It sort of went away after 10 mins for 5 mins, then came back worse for another 10 mins, then left again I hope this IS a sign they are leaving!

Saturday 18 September, 2010: 01:20pm - 01:25pm

3

very short... maybe they are starting to leave now

Saturday 18 September, 2010: 1284780900 - 1284782100

6

Imigran up the nose and it was tolerable for 15 minutes under full car aircon. I wonder just how soon you have to get it with the imigran for it to be effective. What is annoying is that my nose on the side of the ch is ALWAYS blocked which makes it difficult to use the imigran spray.

Friday 17 September, 2010: 1284690000 - 1284695400

7

chose to save last imigran for morning

Friday 17 September, 2010: 1284651000 - 1284652200

7

again so soon, I was trying to sleep after a week of 3 hour sleep nights due to chest infection! - I used the last imigran

4

This on started because I napped. Aborted with imigran - tingly around thumb webbing on abortion

Wednesday 15 September, 2010: 1284502800 - 1284503400

4

Aborted with imigran - tingly around thumb webbing on abortion

Wednesday 15 September, 2010: 1284501600 - 1284502800

6

Started as leaving parents. No imigran, was bad by time we got home, I stayed in the car, stripped off air-con on full and got cold. As soon as I got completely cold, it quickly went. I suspect coldness causing blood vessels to constrict to direct more blood to body core helps

Tuesday 14 September, 2010: 1284459600 - 1284461400

4

Aborted with imigran

Monday 13 September, 2010: 1284364800 - 1284365400

Saturday 11 September, 2010: 1284163200 - 1284165300

7

Particularly Nasty.

1

seems like a ch.... not sure..... this goes on for the next week... I'll post when it gets worse.

Above period: 48 Attacks over 48 days.

-- Period of remission (200 weeks, 5 days) --

Friday 27 October, 2006: 1161910800 - 1161939600

1

I've had a minor one all day that was relieved for about 30 mins by breathing in cold aircon in the car. I'd much rather this than 30 mins of hell tho.

Thursday 26 October, 2006: 1161820800 - 1161825000

2

again, really mild. I took nothing and did nothing for it except press my fingers into my temple to ease it.

Wednesday 25 October, 2006: 1161741900 - 1161746100

2

A very mild one, Took the cafergot when it started but it didn't get rid of it except it might have kept it to a minimum.

Tuesday 24 October, 2006: 1161648000 - 1161649200

7

ok, I spoke too soon, but I got in the car again wrapped in a blanket, and let the aircon hit my head on max cold, high speed and took deep fast breaths of it until it made me light headed, and it got rid of it in 20 mins. This is good because I also have the steeringwheel there to bang my head on while I do it. This method also stops me from becoming completely exhausted from them and doesnt leave shadows for the rest of the day.

Cafergot seems to be doing the trick in preventing them... Hope I'm not speaking too soon tho.

This time I got into the car, set the air-con up to full and max cold put my head up to the vent and breathed it in, and let it blast the side of my head. I had to be wrapped up in a blanket due to the cold and the coldness hurt my fingers while they were massaging my temple, but the coldness didn't hurt my face, and I am pretty sure that by deep breathing the cold air, I ended it a lot sooner than it would have otherwise. I think that breathing faster than normal also helps as it sends extra oxygen to your brain, which causes your brain to constrict the dilated blood vessels in an attempt to limit the amount of oxygen it gets. So I was pretty happy that it only lasted 30 mins. When I get one and the sumatriptan doesnt work (I took 2 nasal sprays this morning and they didnt work) all I can really do is hope that the attack doesnt last long.

Once again, the Imigran nasal spray did nothing. I think it just went down my throat again. 1 hour and 50 mins of hell suffered. I'm always scared during an attack that it won't stop... but it always does. Sort of. I'm left with 'shadows' all day.

it came back! 2 hours after the previous one started to the minute, and lasting the same amount of time, 45 mins. It's hell, it feels like I am dying. I can't get into a sitting position that helps, and I can't squeeze or press my head in a way that relieves the pain, although I keep trying. Sometimes I freeze thinking that whatever convoluted way I am applying pressure to my head at that point in time might actually be helping, but then it fights back with even more force, reducing me to a whimpering pile of agony again. BAM! BAM BAM! 3 successive shards of extra sharp pain above my eye for even thinking of trying to make it stop. I feel like I'm going to throw up. I can't sit still, Time is the only thing that will bring relief. It's now 1:30am and I'm scared to go back to sleep because it feels like it brings it on. A friend told me the other day that he really doesn't know how I handle it all. Me either.

I didnt think this would turn out to be a full one, but it did. It was too late to take the Imigran spray by the time I realised it was. it's made more difficult to tolerate by the nausea that comes with it. I was exhausted after it left, I staggered to bed at 11:30 and began to snooze until...

sumatriptan (Imigran nasal spray) didn't work. I think I inhaled it too hard and it just went down my throat instead. Worst so far, So I took 8 panadeine Forte but that did nothing, except bad things to my liver... GP should prescribe a pain reliever that doesn't have paracetamol in it, considering the high doses I need to make these at least a little more bearable.
